Congratulations -- you sound exactly like a teacher! I know -- as someone paid to do that job and marveling constantly that I am, those are the anxieties we all have, but when you get into the thick of it, you remember what the real aim is -- not injecting "knowledge" into others heads, but helping your students figure things out that they already know, to articulate the things they have sensed but never spelled out for themselves. Well worth remembering the Latin root of educate (oh, listen to the medievalist, always with the Latin roots!) which means to lead out. Not to know, not to tell, but to lead out what's already there.

I often think the best quality for a teacher is curiosity -- well, it's the best quality for a student, too, as you well know (and have in abundance). Listen and find out all you can from your students, and they will have a great experience. So will you!

Kim,

Thanks for posting something about my film. Your organization looks very interesting and your operating principles seem quite sound. I created this film specifically for the purpose of sparking debate and critical thought among those in the development community. I would be happy to send you free DVD copies of the film if you would have a use for them in your organization. Several other volunteer type programs are using the film as a pre-trip educational tool to sensitize volunteers to issues of respect and dependency. Please feel free to contact me for questions or copies.

Best,

Peter Brocck
